Herry arrives home from school to find out that Flossie is sick. He is upset that he can't play with her, and then irritated that he can't watch his favorite TV show because the TV is in her room and he can't make noise in the house. Finally he is jealous because she gets food on a tray and a new book which their father reads to her when Herry wants to play a game with him. Before falling asleep, Herry pretends that his water is actually medicine just like Flossie's.
He wakes up the next morning with a fever and quickly discovers that being sick isn't fun at all. He can't watch TV because his head hurts, the medicine tastes yucky, and the food his mother brings him hurts his sore throat. The special quilt his grandmother made makes him too hot and he's too tired to focus on the story his father reads to him. The next day he wants to play with Flossie, who has recovered, but he still aches all over.
When he is finally well after three days of being sick, he cheerfully gets up, eats his breakfast and goes out to play with Flossie in the sandbox.
